HK Swings
What is Swing?

Swing is a kind of jazz music that originated in America in the early part of the 20th Century. In the late 1920s to the 1950s Swing bands were hugely popular throughout the USA and the world. These bands would play in places such as the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem , New York , which occupied an entire city block, and hundreds of people would come to dance Lindy Hop and other Swing dances. The most popular and successful Swing bands were the bands led by greats such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman, and featured singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Jimmy Rushing.

What is Lindy Hop?

Lindy Hop is a kind of social partner dance born in the late 1920s. It is an eight count dance which often features the air moves for which Swing Dancing is famous. In an air move, one of the two dancers flies into the air, often including impressive flips and turns, or else slides along the floor in equally acrobatic maneuvers. The dance has several variations and styles, some fast and energetic, some slow and slinky.

Karen is one of the pioneers who dedicates herself in establishing Swing dance scene in Hong Kong. HK Swing Dance has its regular gathering on Wednesday and Saturday at Grappa's Cellar and Fringe Club.

Becky (UK) & Jacques (Switzerland) --Bachata Demonstration

Becky and Jacques met 6 months ago on a dance floor in Hong Kong, introduced by a mutual friend who thought they would dance well together. They instantly clicked and have been dancing together socially ever since.

Becky has also been living in Hong Kong for just over a year. She started dancing in her native London about 5 years ago. Benefiting from the diversity of the salsa scene in London, Becky learned various styles of salsa and very quickly became addicted. She loves dancing with anyone who shares her energy and enthusiasm for salsa and enjoys the variety and challenge of dancing with leaders who have different styles. She has been inspired by some fantastic teachers over the years, and has learnt much from sharing knowledge and ideas with her dancing partners and friends. Over the last few months Becky has enjoyed being introduced to a different way of dancing Bachata by Jacques, encouraged by his infectious passion and smile!

Jacques comes from Switzerland, though his family are Spanish and Venezuelan. Jacques started dancing in Geneva, where he first learnt salsa from Colombians and Cubans teaching in the city. He developed his style over many years of dancing in clubs and has incorporated elements of dance that he has picked up on his travels. He was inspired by the style of Bachata he saw on a trip to the Dominican Republic, with its complex footwork and fluid movement and has developed his own way of expressing the music. Jacques arrived in Hong Kong a year ago and when he is not dancing, works as an architect.

Jacques and Becky will be demonstrating a style of dancing Bachata rarely seen in Hong Kong ˇV fast, flowing, funky, and most importantly; fun!
